After a brief introduction by Dr. Eva Johais, Dr. Delf Rothe impressively illustrated the political effects of satellite-based technology by demonstrating the peculiarities of the ‚machine gaze‘ on refugee camps in Jordan. Professor Dr. Kristin Bergtora Sandvik then sketched out the manifold activities and uncharted territories of the humanitarian innovation movement and raised a number of troubling questions for researchers and practitioners. Both presentations revealed the need for increased ‚digital literacy‘ and interdisciplinary collaboration to be able to understand and/or shape the developments in the humanitarian sector.
