Research Associate, part-time 65% (25,98 hours) starting April 1st 2024
At the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (Institut für Friedensicherungsrecht und Humanitäres Volkerrecht, IFHV) of RUB, the part-time position (25,98 hours a week) of a Research Associate (payment according to TV-L E 13) is available starting from April 1st 2024. The position is limited until 31.03.2027 (3 years). The possibility for a PhD is given.
The IFHV is an interdisciplinary central research institute at RUB located in Bochumer Fenster (near Bochum main station). With its traditionally strong focus on and expertise in international law, the institute fosters research and teaching in the field of Humanitarian Studies, including the participation of the Faculties of Law, Social Science, Geosciences, and Public Health.
Welthungerhilfe (WHH) is one of the largest private aid agencies in Germany; politically and religiously independent. Hunger is the biggest solvable problem in the world. WHH wants to do all it can to find a lasting solution to this problem. WHH bases its efforts on the principle of empowering people to help themselves, which it implements with measures ranging from rapid disaster relief to rehabilitation to long-term development cooperation projects with national and international partner organizations.
You can expect a multifaceted position in a central scientific institute with diverse cooperation partners in Germany and abroad. The positions focus lies is in the areas of food security, development policy and disaster research and specifically in the methodological development and scientific support of the Global Hunger Index.
The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a tool intended to comprehensively measure and track hunger and undernutrition at global, regional, and national levels. It is designed to raise awareness of the commitment to end hunger, highlights the world regions where additional resources are most urgently needed, and provides recommendations on how to take action to end hunger. It has been published annually since 2006, initially by IFPRI and WHH, since 2007 also in cooperation with Concern Worldwide, and since 2018 solely by WHH and Concern Worldwide.
Your field of responsibility includes:
- Methodological development and scientific monitoring of the Global Hunger Index in cooperation with Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide
- Independent research in the field of food security, development policy and related research fields such as disaster prevention, disaster risk research, etc.
- Writing scientific articles for the Global Hunger Index
- Content-related and strategic coordination processes with relevant stakeholders
- Organization of scientific conferences in connection with the publication of the Global Hunger Index
Your profile:
- Completed academic university education in social sciences, economics, geography or related disciplines with a focus on quantitative methods, statistics, econometrics, or similar
- Very good knowledge in the field of multivariate analyses and ideally initial experience with machine learning approaches
- Advanced knowledge of R, Python, Matlab, Stata or comparable software
- Interest in independent research work; ideally in the areas of food security, humanitarian aid or development cooperation
- Experience in the organization, communication and coordination of processes with various stakeholders
- Experience abroad and/or practical experience in humanitarian work or development cooperation is desirable
- Very good written and oral knowledge of English is required, knowledge of German an advantage
- Cooperative working style, flexibility and organizational talent
